SAFEGUARDING THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF DIPNET FISHING

Torne Valley Dipnet Culture

The main objective of the Interreg Aurora project is to preserve the hundreds of years old cultural heritage of dipnet fishing for coming generations which is vital for the identity of the Torne Valley.

Dipnet fishing is characteristic cultural specialty and known in the communities and worldwide, among the locals and visitors. Finland and Sweden have decided to nominate the tradition as a next candidate for multinational application to Unesco. Sustainable safeguarding of the living cultural heritage and the tourism development can both contribute to the preservation of heritage-related practices and to the livelihoods of dipnet fishing communities.
