Facing Challenges Exploring Opportunities webinar 6 May 2025

Re-using buildings for new businesses: Exploring opportunities through real-world examples – Webinar 6 May

The final part of the Re-Archtive North project’s workshop series for municipalities will take place on May 6, 2025, 9:30–11:45 (Finnish time)

In this workshop, we’ll hear two real-life examples of how old or existing buildings have been successfully repurposed to establish new businesses.

Case Rakuunamäki:
A former military barracks area has been transformed into a vibrant destination where visitors can enjoy a blend of historic charm and urban atmosphere. The area now hosts several businesses and has become one of Lappeenranta’s top tourist attractions.

Come and hear how this success story began and what kinds of collaborations—particularly between the municipality and entrepreneurs—have been key to its development.

Case Kattilakoski:
A relatively new restaurant building in a beautiful riverside location stood empty for several years, until a new entrepreneur moved to the area all the way from Australia.

What motivated this bold investment in both the area and the building?

We’ll interview Henrik Berg, one of the restaurant’s co-owners, and hear about the challenges and successes from the first year of Restaurant Kattilakoski.

During the workshop we’ll brainstorm around the needs in your own municipality and how those needs align with the existing building stock.

What challenges are there? What opportunities do you see? And how can municipalities support the realization of new business ideas?
