The Interreg Aurora funded project ReCap ASáp – Regaining capacity in a changing Sápmi is planning a “Sámi Arena” in Kautokeino 9-15 June 2025.
The aim of the project is to strengthen the Sámi civil society’s capacity to effectively participate in social debates, political engagement and advocacy. Project partners are the Saami Council and Suoma Sámi Guovdašsearvi. The project has been inspired by events such as Arendalsuka in Norway, Almedalsveckan in Sweden, and SuomiAreena in Finland.
“Sámi Arena” will have a common-Sámi perspective. There will be an extensive programme that gathers actors from the whole of Sápmi, and with an aim of engaging the Sámi society in debates on solutions for the future, policy development and knowledge exchange. The programme will also contain cultural arrangements and social events.
The project has been appointed as an Operation of Strategic Importance by the Interreg Aurora Programme. This means a project which provides a significant contribution to the achievement of the objectives of the Interreg Aurora Programme.
“The aim of the event is for the Sámi society to discuss important issues and look for solutions to common challenges. As the arctic region of the EU, the development in Sápmi is also of great relevance to the European Union. We are happy to be able to invite the EU Commission to attend the first Sámi Arena and are looking forward to welcoming you to Guovdageaidnu in June 2025” says Åsa Larsson Blind, project manager and vice president of the Saami Council.
